The official trailer for Metropolis.
Metropolis was released January of 1927 and is based off of the 1925 novel of the same name. It was met with mixed reviews at time of release, one of the main complaints was the run time of the film. The director then cut a lot of footage from the film for future releases. However in doing so the winds of time have taken the cut footage and have either damaged it or destroyed it forever.
Many restorations of the film have been made since the 1970's. The original picture shown in 1927 was 153 minutes in length. The 2002 restoration was 118 minutes in length. This was thought to be the closest to the film we would see, but in 2008 a damaged original print was found in a museum in Argentina. After a long restoration process, the film was restored by 95% and released in 2010 with a run time of 148 minutes, just 5 minutes of missing footage which have been replaced with sentences describing what happened. Damaged footage has also been restored to its best quality.
Metropolis is art, art that is of the highest museum piece quality. The film takes place in 2026 in a city where the wealthy rule over the city. The workers that keep the city running, live below the earth's ground where the machines that keep the city functioning are. The workers are fed up and want retaliation, and only the city's heir can keep the peace.
For those of you not into the silent films you may want to avoid this. A modern time rescore was done by The New Pollutants. The music is not 1920's in any way or form but it works well and matches, something that modern music almost is never able to pull off in silent films.
